Bundesliga: Riera is Under Scrutiny Ahead of Key BVB Clash

Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Albert Riera will look to right the ship when they visit Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park for their next Bundesliga match this Friday night.

Riera has faced scrutiny over the past few weeks due to Eintracht Frankfurt’s lacklustre league form. And following Die Adler’s 2-1 loss against Hamburg SV last time out, the team reportedly held a crisis meeting about Riera, although the embattled head coach remains at the helm against BVB.

Borussia Dortmund are also looking for a win, as they plan to finish their 2025-26 campaign on a high note after bowing down to Bayern Munich yet again. The Yellow Wall are fresh from a shock 1-0 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach, so their confirmation to next season’s Champions League has been slightly delayed.

This is undoubtedly a must-win game for both sides, and SBOTOP has you covered with today’s preview.

Talking Points

Borussia Dortmund’s defence gets overlooked

While Borussia Dortmund will miss out on another Bundesliga title, one can never take away the fact that they boast the league’s best defence this term, having conceded only 32 goals in as many matchdays. They’ve also kept a league-high 14 clean sheets, and they have the third-best offence, with 65 goals.

However, after losing just two of their opening 28 Bundesliga matches – both of which were against Bayern Munich – Borussia Dortmund have now lost three of their last four against Bayer Leverkusen (1-0), Hoffenheim (2-1), and Borussia Monchengladbach (1-0).

After staying firm for most of the match, BVB conceded an 88th-minute goal from Haris Tabakovic. At the time, Niko Kovac deployed the back three of Waldemar Anton, Nico Schlotterbeck, and Luca Reggiani. Some of their notable absentees include Emre Can (knee), Ramy Bensebaini (foot), and Niklas Sule (knee) – none of whom are expected to be available this Friday against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Schlotterbeck will be a key player for BVB’s backline, especially since he’s one of the league’s best defenders this season. The 26-year-old centre-back was a hot commodity in the transfer market, but he has recently agreed to a new contract extension with the Yellow Wall.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s European hopes are fading

Eintracht Frankfurt’s fortunes did not turn around, despite replacing Dino Toppmoller with Albert Riera last January. Die Adler have had their problems in recent weeks, winning just one of their previous six games. In their last three, they’ve managed just one point and have been overtaken by SC Freiburg, who now occupy the final European football berth.

Riera now has a shorter leash, as the 44-year-old boss reportedly clashed with Die Adler’s star player, Jonathan Burkardt. According to local reports, Riera was critical of Burkardt’s fitness level, so the former benched the latter during their 1-1 draw against Augsburg. Besides Burkardt, several players are also dissatisfied with Riera’s man-management.

History

Friday marks the third meeting between Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt this season. BVB eliminated Die Adler in the DFB-Pokal second round last October (via penalties) before holding them to a 3-3 draw last January to salvage a point. In the six-goal affair, Max Beier, Felix Nmecha, and Carney Chukwuemeka were on the scoresheet for Borussia Dortmund, while Can Uzun, Younes Ebnoutalib, and Mahmoud Dahoud were on the scoresheet for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Niko Kovac’s men have won nine of their last 12 competitive games at Signal Iduna Park (L3), and they’ve picked up maximum points at home against sides outside of the Top 5 (W12) this term. Albert Riera’s men have conceded at least three goals in all of their away league matches against Top 5 clubs this season (L4).

BVB have largely dominated their Bundesliga head-to-heads against Die Adler, winning 51 times, drawing 22, and losing 32, though they’ve failed to win the last two encounters (D1, L1).

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2026 odds predict Borussia Dortmund to stay undefeated against Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend. BVB are 1.46 favourites to claim maximum points, while Die Adler are huge 5.10 underdogs, and a draw is pegged at 4.51 in the 1X2 market.

After their six-goal thriller in the reverse fixture, football fans are inclined to believe that there will be more Bundesliga 2026 highlights in their second league encounter on Friday.

With that said, bettors may also add Over 3.25 at 1.78, Over 3.50 at 1.96, Over 3.75 at 2.23, and even Total Goal 4-6 at 2.25 to the parlay. Speaking of having six goals between them previously, check out the Correct Score of 3-3, as it is on offer at a mouthwatering 46.00 your bet.
