With Bayern Munich clinching the Bundesliga title with four matchdays to spare, following their 4-2 win against VfB Stuttgart, all that’s left is the battle for the other European football spots. With Die Bayern taking one, only three teams can join them in the Champions League next season, while the fifth and sixth-place teams will end up in the Europa League and Europa Conference League, respectively.
As of this writing, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and VfB Stuttgart are in the Top 4, with 64, 59, and 56 points, while Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen aren’t far behind at 54 and 52 points. After that, SC Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt are the distant challengers for Europe at 43 and 42 points.
Today, SBOTOP previews three of the most important games in Matchday 31, featuring Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and VfB Stuttgart, as they will face SC Freiburg, Union Berlin, and Werder Bremen.
RB Leipzig vs Union Berlin
RB Leipzig stretched their winning streak to four games, following their 3-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt last time out. This means the Red Bulls are guaranteed to finish no lower than sixth place, which would qualify them for a UEFA competition next season. However, it remains to be seen whether that’s in the Champions League, Europa League, or Europa Conference League.
Yan Diomande, Antonio Nusa, and Conrad Harder scored the goals for Die Roten Bullen against Die Adler. Diomande is now level with Christoph Baumgartner at the top of the team’s scoring chart at 12 goals, and the 19-year-old winger is certainly on top of Union Berlin’s scouting report ahead of this Friday.
Friday night will mark Marie-Louise Eta’s second game as Union Berlin head coach, following their 2-1 loss to VfL Wolfsburg last time out. Eta became the first and only woman in charge of a men’s team in Europe’s Top 5 leagues, and she’s searching for her maiden victory.
Union Berlin badly need a win to snap their four-game winless run and keep pace at a Top 10 spot. However, the Bundesliga 2026 odds don’t expect them to replicate their 3-1 win in the reverse fixture last December at Alten Forsterei.

VfB Stuttgart vs Werder Bremen
Matchday 31 gets dicier on Sunday, as VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen will battle for three important points at MHP Arena. By that time, Die Schwaben have just come off from a grueling DFB-Pokal semi-final tie against SC Freiburg, while Die Werderaner have had the luxury of having no midweek matches.
Sebastian Hoeneß is in a bit of a pickle here, as he has the dilemma of whether his team should go all-out on the DFB-Pokal or this league game on the weekend to boost their Champions League hopes. Either way, he’s relieved to have his top scorer back, as Deniz Undav, with 18 Bundesliga goals, is available again after serving his suspension against Bayern Munich. However, VfB Stuttgart will miss Finn Jeltsch, who sustained an abdominal injury.
Like RB Leipzig, VfB Stuttgart are also guaranteed at least a sixth-place finish, so they’re qualified for Europe for a third consecutive season. The last time they did so was 16 years ago, between 2007-08 and 2010-11.
VfB Stuttgart recorded their biggest away win of the season, a 4-0 result against Werder Bremen in Matchday 14 at the Weser Stadium. However, Werder Bremen have some confidence heading into Sunday, as they won 3-1 against 10-man Hamburg last time out, with skipper Jens Stage scoring a brace.

Borussia Dortmund vs SC Freiburg

Borussia Dortmund are keen to bounce back from their 2-1 road loss against Hoffenheim by taking care of business against SC Freiburg, who will play in the DFB-Pokal semi-finals before this Sunday’s match. BVB are on a two-game losing streak, while the Black Forest have won three of their last four league games.
SC Freiburg are on a roll, as besides the DFB-Pokal, they’re also one of the favourites to win the Europa League after beating Celta Vigo in the quarter-finals. Julian Schuster’s men are coming off a 2-1 win over Heidenheim, as Johan Manzambi and Maximilian Eggestein were on the Bundesliga 2026 highlights reel.
These two sides shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw last December, as Lucas Holer scored a late equaliser to nullify Ramy Bensebaini’s goal in the 31st minute. It also helped SC Freiburg that Jobe Bellingham received his marching orders before the hour mark, reducing Borussia Dortmund to 10 men at Europa-Park-Stadion.
