Manchester United vs Brentford
With five games of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign left to play, there is a scramble for European places gathering pace, and the Monday night fixture between Manchester United and Brentford features two clubs at the heart of the action.
Michael Carrick’s Red Devils are up in third place and heading for a Champions League place, while Keith Andrews’ Bees are in ninth as one of seven teams separated by just five points, between sixth and 12th – with European spots guaranteed for seventh place.
Manchester United visited Chelsea last week and eked out a 1-0 win, while Brentford played out a goalless draw in the West London derby against European rivals Fulham. The Premier League 2026 betting odds say we’re likely to see a home win, but the Bees are devilishly difficult to beat, and the Red Devils, not the most consistent of teams, will need to be near their best.
Talking Points
Carrick is almost there
When Michael Carrick was given the keys to the managers’ office at Old Trafford in January, he was given the remit to win Champions League football again. And with his calm demeanour and respect of the players, afforded to him because if his connections to the club, he is very near to his target.
Manchester United are currently third in the Premier League table, level on points with Aston Villa and eight ahead of Brighton in sixth. So, with the English league having five Champions League spots available, the Red Devils are within touching distance from reaching their goal of a return to Europe’s showpiece club tournament.
While neighbours Manchester City are chasing a domestic treble, the red side of the city is happy just to make some sustained progress, something they have failed to do since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Carrick is one of the fan-favourites to take over the job on a full-time basis once his contract expires at the end of the campaign. So why has he succeeded, modestly so far, where his predecessor Ruben Amorim failed?
The United players are playing for their manager, and that’s a start. Captain Bruno Fernandes has been the club’s standout star over the past few seasons, and he never shirks the limelight. But some of his teammates have come out of the shadows under Carrick.

Striker Benjamin Sesko, one of last summer’s expensive recruits, has started to score more regularly, and Matheus Cunha is thriving too, scoring the winner against Chelsea last week. 21-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, left out in the cold by Amorim, is back in the fold and pushing for an England place at the World Cup. These are early days for sure, but Carrick is on the right track.
Andrews’ draw specialists need to find their sting
Five draws from five in the league have helped Brentford to keep a form of momentum, but they have slipped a little off the pace in the race for a European place.
When Andrews was appointed manager last summer and Bryan Mbeumo and Yoanne Wissa left the club I, among many pundits, expected the Bees to struggle. But Andrews has done a phenomenal job, thanks in no little part to star striker Igor Thiago. The 24-year-old Brazilian star has scored 21 goals to put him second in the race for the Golden Boot, three behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. He has bagged almost half of Brentford’s league goals this term, and Thiago has scored three of Brentford’s four goals from their last five league games.
Goalless draws against Fulham, Bournemouth, and Leeds United tell us the Bees have a solid defence, marshalled by captain Nathan Collins. But they only have one striker with a serious sting.
History
The head-to-heads between the Red Devils and Bees have been more balanced than you might expect, particularly you Red Devils fans, as the Bees have picked up five results from 10 meetings, three wins, and two draws.
Brentford are yet to earn a Premier League point at Old Trafford. But when the two teams met in West London last September, the Bees won 3-1, as Thiago bagged a brace and Fernandes missed a penalty.
In terms of recent Premier League 2026 results, Manchester United have won three, drawn one, and lost two of their last six games. Meanwhile, Brentford have drawn all six, including five league games and a 2-2 FA Cup draw with West Ham United before going out on penalties, as Dango Ouattara bizarrely messed up with a Panenka attempt.
Betting Tip
Manchester United are the clear favourites at SBOTOP odds of 1.89 to win this clash, with Brentford at 3.95 and the draw at 3.75. The Double Chance: Brentford or Draw is at 1.94, and while a 1-1 draw is the most likely outcome at odds of 7.00, I prefer to go for a cagey game of few goals.
