Premier League: Brentford Win Can Give United More Confidence

Manchester United are the only undefeated team in Europe, but that’s hardly the case in the Premier League. Ruben Amorim’s side is winless in their last five English top-flight matches, and they hope to break their drought when they visit the Gtech Community Stadium this Sunday.

The Red Devils are no longer prioritising the Premier League because they’re 14th in the table with 39 points. Since they won’t be relegated, they’re going all-in for the Europa League. However, beating the Bees will further improve their confidence ahead of their second leg against Athletic Bilbao next week.

On the other hand, Brentford are three notches above Manchester United in the English top-flight standings with 49 points. Thomas Frank’s men are unbeaten in their last four and are fresh from a huge upset victory against Nottingham Forest (2-0) last night.

Mbeumo a wanted man at Brentford

Thomas Frank recently admitted that Brentford is a “selling club,” so don’t be surprised if they cash in on some of their stars this summer. Bryan Mbeumo is a top sell candidate, as he has shouldered the scoring load, filling the void left by Ivan Toney, who left for the Saudi Pro League last year.

Mbeumo has formed a robust strike partnership with Yoane Wissa this season, combining for 34 league goals and nine assists. Kevin Schade is another emerging star who could take over if Mbeumo is sold. The 23-year-old German has seven league goals and two assists this term.

Schade and Wissa led Brentford past Nottingham Forest last night. Schade gave the Bees the lead before halftime, and Wissa scored off a long ball from goalkeeper Mark Flekken in the 70th minute.

Mikkel Damsgaard is another player to watch if you’re Manchester United, as he pulls the strings in the middle of the park. The Denmark international is the Bees’ best playmaker with 10 assists and two league goals.

 

Lineup boosts for Manchester United

Manchester United have been dogged by injuries this season, so it’s nice to see Amad Diallo and Matthijs de Ligt back in the matchday squad against Athletic Bilbao yesterday. Diallo has been out since February due to a serious ankle injury, and his return was way ahead of schedule, while de Ligt has missed a month with the same, albeit less serious, issue. They provided encouraging cameos last night, and Amorim could consider starting them against Brentford.

Meanwhile, Diogo Dalot could miss the rest of the season due to a calf injury, opening more opportunities for Noussair Mazraoui. Ruben Amorim has integrated several academy youngsters in the past few weeks, like Harry Amass, Tyler Fredricson, Jaydan Dejon Kamason, and Bendito Mantato. 

Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Harry Maguire stood out with their stellar performances against Athletic Bilbao last night. However, don’t be surprised if Amorim rotates them to the bench this weekend to give them rest.
