For Aston Villa, this is about giving head coach Unai Emery a robust team to compete in the Premier League while balancing their books. Meanwhile, for Bayern Munich, it’s all about maintaining their dominance in the Bundesliga, having won two Meisterschale in a row under head coach Vincent Kompany.

Aston Villa’s new boy suffers injury scare
One of Aston Villa’s marquee additions this summer is Alejandro Garnacho, who’s hoping to regain his form after wearing out his welcome at Manchester United and Chelsea over the past few years. The Villans have had a reputation for helping outcasts return to their best under head coach Unai Emery, and the Argentine winger hopes to be their next success story in that regard this upcoming season.
However, Garnacho endured a nightmare start to his Aston Villa career during their 3-1 win over BG Pathum in Thailand. He left the pitch with a bloodied mouth after a collision with Australian midfielder Ryan Edwards, who drew criticism for the dirty play. Garnacho is now doubtful to play against Bayern Munich because head coach Unai Emery isn’t keen to risk his summer addition, which would halt his integration within the club.
Besides Garnacho, John McGinn also picked up an injury after landing awkwardly on his left knee following a foul, prompting Emery to substitute the skipper. But at least McGinn was able to walk away on his own power. McGinn only recently returned to Aston Villa following his World Cup run with Scotland, who finished third in Group C, not enough to qualify for the Round of 32.
Johan Manzambi is another injury casualty for Aston Villa, as the 20-year-old midfielder continues to recover from the knee injury he sustained while playing for Switzerland during this summer’s World Cup. There’s no definitive return date for him.
The Villans won the game, as Emi Buendia, Victor Lindelof, and Boubacar Kamara were on the scoresheet. Kamara’s goal on the hour mark was particularly sweet, as this was his first appearance in seven months due to a serious knee injury.
Bayern Munich have valid midfield question
Bayern Munich left the pitch after their 2-1 win over Jeju SK with more questions than answers involving their midfield rotation under head coach Vincent Kompany ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Aleksandar Pavlovic has mostly started alongside Joshua Kimmich in a double pivot setup last term, but that might not be the case for long. Pavlovic has yet to regain his form following a disappointing World Cup, while Tom Bischof has been superb and could be set for a bigger role.
Furthermore, Die Bayern have reportedly put Joao Palhinha (alongside Bryan Zaragoza and Sacha Boey) up for sale, which is confusing for their fans because of the Portuguese’s performances. Against Jeju SK, Palhinha was an absolute monster when it comes to winning the ball back, and given Bayern Munich’s relatively thin midfield depth, Kompany might change his mind about Palhinha.

Believe it or not, Friday marks only the third competitive meeting (and first club friendly) between Aston Villa and Bayern Munich. Their past two encounters have been high-stakes matches. Aston Villa won 1-0 twice against Bayern Munich in the 1982 European Cup final and in the league phase during the 2024 Champions League.
Peter Withe scored the marginal goal for the Villans in 1982 in Rotterdam, which was their first major trophy in Europe, followed by the 1982 European Super Cup, 2001 Intertoto Cup, and last season’s Europa League. Jhon Duran followed suit in October 2024 in Aston Villa’s first home match in Europe’s elite club competition in 41 years.
In terms of their form this preseason, Bayern Munich have the edge with two wins and one loss, including a whopping 15-0 rout of Rottach-Egern, an eighth-division team in Germany. On the other hand, Aston Villa have three wins and two losses thus far, though their last two have been against Asian sides.
