Bundesliga: Hoffenheim Must Avoid a Mainz Banana Peel

TSG Hoffenheim vs Mainz

Hoffenheim recently slipped out of the Bundesliga Top 4 after going winless in their last two league matches before the international break. After winning 4-2 against bottom-feeders Heidenheim, Hoffenheim drew 1-1 with VfL Wolfsburg before suffering an embarrassing 5-0 loss against RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena last time out.

As a result, Die Kraichgauer are fifth in the German top-flight table with 50 points, level with fourth-seeded RB Leipzig. Despite this, Christian Ilzer’s men are still on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League with seven matches left to play, since only the goal difference separates them from fourth place.

Meanwhile, Mainz are in the middle of a resurgence under Urs Fischer. They’ve risen to 11th place after losing two of their last 14 league matches, and the 05ers are also deep into the Europa Conference League knockouts after eliminating Sigma in the Round of 16.

Talking Points

Hoffenheim facing contract dilemmas

Besides their dip in recent form, Hoffenheim have bigger things to worry about ahead of the summer transfer window, as they’re in danger of losing up to three of their key players. Ozan Kabak and Andrej Kramaric’s contracts will expire soon, while Fisnik Asllani could be sold to the highest bidder if Die Kraichgauer plan to cash in.

According to local reports, Kabak looks likely to stay at Hoffenheim beyond the summer, as the centre-back is in advanced negotiations over an extension that will run until at least 2029. Since returning from a serious knee injury at the start of the season, the 26-year-old has been an important figure at the rearguard, having made 19 appearances and scored four goals.

Kramaric is Hoffenheim’s top scorer with 10 goals and five assists. But the Croatian striker wants a bigger payday, and there’s a big chance that the 34-year-old could seek his desired lucrative deal elsewhere.

As for Asllani, the 23-year-old forward has Barcelona among his top suitors. Hoffenheim placed a €30 million release clause on Asllani’s contract, which the Blaugrana are reportedly more than willing to trigger, especially after he almost led Kosovo to the World Cup finals this summer.

Nebel steps up for Mainz

Paul Nebel hopes to give Mainz their third consecutive Bundesliga victory when they face TSG Hoffenheim
Mainz 05’s Paul Nebel celebrates after scoring a goal during their Bundesliga match against Eintracht Frankfurt

Mainz secured three important points during their 2-1 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt, as Paul Nebel scored a rare double. The 23-year-old midfielder set the tone for the 05ers and was rightfully named Man of the Match. Nebel is now the team’s joint-second-leading scorer with four goals this term.

With Nadiem Amiri – Mainz’s top scorer with 10 league goals and two assists – still sidelined by a heel injury, Nebel is expected to continue to take his place in the starting XI. The 05ers will need more from him, especially since the team is dealing with a worrying injury list that includes Anthony Caci (hamstring), Maxim Dal (knee), Andreas Hanche-Olsen (muscular), Benedict Hollerbach (Achilles), Silas (leg), and Robin Zentner (groin).

History

Mainz and Hoffenheim shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in their last league meeting in November at the MEWA Arena. Hoffenheim took the lead early after an own goal by Andreas Hanche-Olsen. But Mainz persevered and scored the equaliser through Danny da Costa, salvaging a point at home despite being reduced to 10 men late after Dominik Kohr was sent off.

As mentioned, Mainz have been a resurgent side under head coach Urs Fischer. Before this, Mainz struggled under Bo Henriksen, having won only one out of 12 matches. Since the first week of December, only Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart, and Hoffenheim have picked up more points than the 05ers.

Hoffenheim are hellbent on qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since 2018-19.

Betting Tip

The Bundesliga 2026 odds expect Hoffenheim to return to winning ways when the German top-flight resumes this weekend. Die Kraichgauer are 1.74 favourites to take maximum points, while Mainz are 3.89 underdogs, and a draw is at 3.72 in the 1X2 market.

Despite the disparity in the betting odds, this game could be closer than you think, given the difference in recent form between these two sides. Either way, we expect new Bundesliga 2026 highlights from this match, which is why we recommend this bet. SBOTOP punters may also add Under 3.25 at 1.77, Under 3.00 at 2.01, and Under 2.75 at 2.29 to the parlay.

Furthermore, a Correct Score of 1-1 – the result of their previous league meeting – offers a robust payout of 7.70. And a Correct Score of 2-0 in favour of Hoffenheim and Mainz have significantly larger offers of 10.00 and 29.00, respectively.
