Eintracht Frankfurt vs SC Freiburg
Eintracht Frankfurt and SC Freiburg will battle for the seventh seed, which could offer European football depending on how the rest of the season plays out, at the Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday night.
At the time of writing, SC Freiburg have the edge, as they’re seventh in the Bundesliga standings with 33 points. The visitors are coming off a 2-1 win against Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend. On the other hand, Eintracht Frankfurt are in eighth place with 31 points after dropping their league game against Bayern Munich (3-2).
Whoever wins on Sunday takes the seventh spot and could be closer to the Top 6, currently held by Bayer Leverkusen, who have a winnable game against Mainz tomorrow.

Talking Points
Burkardt is back for Eintracht Frankfurt
After spending several months on the sidelines due to a calf injury, Jonathan Burkardt finally made his awaited return in Eintracht Frankfurt’s 3-2 loss against Bayern Munich, and the German striker provided a spark off the bench.
Burkardt replaced Mahmoud Dahoud in the hour mark and calmly converted a penalty 17 minutes later for his ninth league goal of the season. Despite being out for a while, the 25-year-old is still among the frontrunners for the Bundesliga Golden Boot, as he’s four goals adrift of second-placers Deniz Undav and Luis Diaz.

Given his immediate impact last time out, Burkardt, who has scored four goals in his career against SC Freiburg (more than against any other side), should reclaim his place in the starting XI against SC Freiburg, likely joining Ayoube Amaimouni and Jean-Matteo Bahoya in the final third, with Fares Chaibi, Mario Gotze, and Arnaud Kalimuendo coming off the bench.
There’s more good news for Die Adler, as Robin Koch was back on the training pitch on Wednesday. The 29-year-old centre-back missed the Bayern Munich match due to illness, and the skipper’s return is a big boost for head coach Albert Riera.
Ginter shows his class with SC Freiburg
SC Freiburg bounced back from their recent setback against Hoffenheim (3-0) with a 2-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach, as centre-back Matthias Ginter produced a Man of the Match-calibre performance.
The 32-year-old defender opened the scoring for the Black Forest after he acrobatically fired the ball home against his former club when the ball went his way following a long throw-in. Beyond his goal, Ginter also provided a steady presence at the back, helping limit the Foals to just two shots on target despite their possession advantage. With Ginter in the rearguard, Borussia Monchengladbach’s xG was only 0.89, compared to 2.39 for SC Freiburg.
Another thing to note is that SC Freiburg are dangerous at set-pieces, as they’ve scored 16 goals from such a position, with only Bayern Munich scoring more. Vincenzo Grifo is their guy in that regard.
History
Since their goalless draw in September 2023, Eintracht Frankfurt and SC Freiburg have had one barnburner after another in their last five league meetings. During this period, Die Adler have lost only once against the Black Forest (W2, D2).
These two German clubs shared the spoils in their ding-dong reverse fixture last October. Jonathan Burkardt’s brace overturned a one-goal deficit created by Derry Scherhant’s super-early goal. However, Vincenzo Grifo had other plans, as he scored a wonderful free-kick for a late equaliser.
There’ll be familiar faces for this game, as Ritsu Doan and Igor Matanovic are out to haunt their former employers this Sunday. Doan spent three years at SC Freiburg before joining Eintracht Frankfurt. Matanovic scored two goals in 25 appearances across all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt before moving to SC Freiburg last summer.
