Premier League: Liverpool’s Egyptian King Set to Leave His Anfield Throne

Liverpool recently confirmed that Mohamed Salah will leave the Premier League side at the end of this season, as he will forego the rest of his contract, which was supposed to run until the summer of 2027. Between now and then, he’ll get to suit up for the Reds up to 15 more times. With this Premier League 2026 news, Reds fans are planning to celebrate him in his remaining weeks.

Salah will leave Anfield as a legend, having won eight major trophies – one Champions League, two Premier Leagues, one FA Cup, one EFL Cup, one Community Shield, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup – since joining from AS Roma in 2017. In hindsight, the £34 million transfer fee Liverpool paid for Salah is a massive bargain, with the countless memories he has left with the fans.

Continue reading below, as SBOTOP looks into Salah’s insane run with Liverpool.

Salah’s Liverpool departure was inevitable

Mohamed Salah could’ve left Liverpool earlier when his previous deal was about to expire in the summer of 2025. However, the Egyptian winger signed a two-year extension to stay at Anfield, despite his share of fraught moments with head coach Arne Slot.

It was a surprise how Salah’s form has fallen off this season, although the sudden death of popular teammate Diogo Jota certainly played a role. Subsequently, Salah was dropped to the bench for three successive games in six days, leading to his explosive interview after Liverpool drew 3-3 with Leeds United in early December. In the interview, Salah claimed that his relationship with Slot had deteriorated.

To Liverpool’s credit, they quickly resolved the issue by making Salah an early sub against Brighton at Anfield the following weekend, and the Egyptian helped them secure a 2-0 win before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations. Since then, Salah has regularly played, whether as a starter or as a substitute.

As time went on, it became clear that the Reds are slowly moving on from Salah, especially having spent roughly £450 million last summer on Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, and Florian Wirtz, signaling that Salah would no longer be the main man. But it seems that he and Slot are on better terms.

Where does Salah rank among the Premier League greats?

Salah actually started his Premier League run with Chelsea, where he and former Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne failed to make a lasting impact, scoring two goals in 19 appearances, with only 10 starts. When he arrived in Liverpool in the summer of 2017, a 25-year-old Salah vowed to give everything for the Reds in his first interview, which he did and more.

Salah has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances for Liverpool, which puts him third on the club’s all-time leading scorers, behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. In the Premier League, Salah has accumulated 189 goals and 92 assists in 310 appearances, and his 281 goal contributions are the biggest for one club in Premier League history, five more than Wayne Rooney for Manchester United (for context).  He is the Premier League’s fourth top scorer and eighth-highest assist maker, has won the league’s Golden Boot four times, and has been named the PFA Player of the Year three times.

In the first few years of his Liverpool run, Salah was one-third of the attacking triumvirate that was one of the best in the world, alongside Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, and is the bridge between then and the current iteration. Overall, Salah boasts a 63.9-per cent win rate in the English top-flight – a reflection of his consistency and winning mentality.

Liverpool face pressure of replacing Salah

Salah’s imminent departure will leave a gaping hole in Liverpool’s attacking corps, so the club hopes that its marquee summer signings will click soon. However, don’t be surprised if the Reds pursue another winger this summer to boost their Premier League 2026 odds. Liverpool have been recently linked to RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, as the 19-year-old is one of the hottest commodities in the transfer market today.

In terms of veteran leadership, Liverpool still have Virgil van Dijk as their skipper, though the Dutchman is also getting up there in age. Dominik Szoboszlai is another emerging leader, while Alisson and Andy Robertson are still around.

As for Salah himself, it remains to be seen where he’ll end up next, and even his own agent said he has no idea. Rumors have linked the Egyptian to an AS Roma reunion, or he could take his talents to the Saudi Pro League or Major League Soccer.
